V.S. Naipaul Writing Techniques

h

In the book Reading & Writing by V.S. Naipaul he develops a personal account, a short and precise autobiography. Pun intended, he only expresses over certain aspects of his career as a writer, and just that, he does not go into detail of his personal life. He begins his narration early in his life when he first decided he wanted to be a writer. Instantly, he shams this early decision since it was only a thought, he didn’t actually practice it. It was a mere desire back then for him. But he was determined to be a writer; this was for him he’s destiny. At the early age of eleven his desire was ignited but he then confesses it was a cover for him to own materials related to the profession. Afterwards he develops his passion fully by reading and writing during his early school years, and also with the help of some family and known ones.  He was sure of what he wanted to be but yet felt he needed to know more about it. The author also recounts his feelings when he moved from rural India to the city and how this had a negative feedback on his desire to be a writer. He felt like an outsider, which seems to be sometimes a normal behavior when we are taken out of our comfort zone. During this move he experiences a writers block with affected gravely his motivation. He later felt in home when he visited the theater and watched Ramlila, a play based on Indian customs. The author marvelously depicts relatable characters with which each writer and reader can associate, can relate to and understand him or her.

The Art of Travel

In Judith Fein’s book Life is a Trip she recounts 14 journeys where she had the opportunity to learn other cultures, experience new places, and feelings. She calls it the transformative magic of travel. And so she vividly transmits her experience to the readers and concludes that traveling inevitably somehow changes us. The book simplifies the art of traveling, in which the traveler connects with the new place, with its people and with oneself.  Her unconventional view of the world and her grand sense of curiosity open doors to new adventures and understanding, allowing us to look deeply into the differences that keep the word fascinating and the similarities that keep us unified. “Life Is a Trip” is a journey of the heart, soul and mind, and we are much the better for it.This definitely solely expresses my feeling when I read the excerpt from the book, couldn't said it better myself.
One of her documented travels was Guatemala. There her curiosity was bound to a figurine representation of Maximon. This was a venerated Mayan god who can be inferred to represent the pleasures or addictions of the people and his supplicants. His description contains smoking, cigars, alcohol, etc. The people of Guatemala saw this god as many things and attributed him many roles. When Fein learns more about this God, she understood he was a divinity with an understanding of human vices and who masters the act of forgiveness. Here lies her lesson in this voyage which she later self-applied and shared with friends and fellow readers. Its imposible to be perfect, but one must keep in mind mistakes are bound to happen and one must accept them and forgive oneself. We have to accept ourselves the way we are and then we can truly be happy.

Pieces of Me

Ever since I can remember it has only been me, my mom, and my sister. Just us three, a women household, you can imagine the estrogen wars. But I can definitely say I've had the most amazing childhood, adolescent years, and life. I can't deny at the beginning it was tough on me, growing up without a dad, and having been able to understand, but it has definitely given me that strong will that now defines me. As I grew, and understood the complexities of life itself it gave me the sense of pursuit from mainly a woman's perspective of developing to a professional and dedicate myself to the things I love. My main goal, to worship my mother and give her everything she deserves for all the hard work she went through raising us as a single mother. Knowing the marvelous job she executed helping us develop and grow up, I've always said: "I want to work so you no longer have to".

Now that my sister and I are already in college the dynamic has changed a little, she studies at Iowa Stat University. The house is definitely not quite the same without her. I miss her a lot all the time (even though I play tough) and every time we take her to the airport the water works are a spectacle.

Every house hold is different, the dynamic, the rules... but it's certainly that uniqueness which defines us and let's us evolve and develop as individuals. As for my part, the love I feel for my family transcends anything I could imagine, through thick and thin it's always us against the world.

Unlimited Reasons to be Puerto Rican

So I don't know if its our entire culture, the food, the vibe, the music, the people, the places, our beaches, our rainforests... is it all that diversity this little island, all that our 100x35 has to offer which makes it an incredible reason for it to be a dream to be Puerto Rican. Is it our mixed heritage and spanglish, attitude, and our unmatched "sazón" which will forever characterize us really unique. If you ask me its every single detail, it all contributes and singles us out, and I don't know about you but...

Maybe I'm biased since after all I was born and raised here, but let's stick to the positive facts then. Recently there were some studies published stating the perfect human is Puerto Rican. Yes it was only about the genome and we are homozygous for all "good" alleles as stated in the article. Its pretty amazing, also our hospitality, how we become a team when times get tough, and how we are a traveler's destination. Our incontrolable strive to persevere, stand out and  be distinguished. It's that mix that just makes us entirely unique. The opportunities for Puerto Ricans are countless we are all over the world and yet we never quite forget our roots for everywhere we go we're proud of them. Almost every reception is just positive "Ohh Puerto Rico the beautiful island, the beautiful people"... It feels great being from this amazing island, a privilege to have the opportunity to enjoy all of its wonders.
